Art historian Gus Casely-Hayford captivated his audience at BBC History Magazine's History Weekend in Malmesbury, when he gave his lecture on Timbuktu.

The historian, who presented the BBC series Lost Kingdoms of Africa in 2012 and wrote the accompanying book, explored how Timbuktu, a medieval trading citadel, became a 16th-century intellectual capital, and then a modern strategic target.
