Graham Swift's Waterland

Currently reading Waterland after a period of 10 years- it's amazing what you see in a story when you have a bit more life experience behind you!
Just wondered if anyone else has enjoyed this book?
Does anyone have any thoughts and feelings about the relevance of teaching history in school?
Does the past have any place in a forward looking, skills based curriculum?
