Historical apologies - what's the point?

Postby Dave Musgrove » Tue Sep 01, 2009 8:07 am

Should mathematician and WWII codebreaker Alan Turing receive an official posthumous apology/knighthood for his treatment after his 1952 conviction of gross indecency? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8226509.stm

Indeed is there any point in any historical apologies?

Personally I can't see the point, those who apologize have no personal responsibility for whatever they're apologizing for, and what good is it going to do to those apologized to, unless it's accompanied by some sort of compensation?

Otherwise it's just a pointless gesture in my opinion..

I can see it being a good thing towards the family, as no-one would want their most famous relative's name to be blackened and have that against them. That said, socially that isn't as much of an issue in this day and age as it was in the past, so it remains nothing more than a nice gesture which should be welcomed I think.
