The Lancaster

I've just posted an interview I did recently with Leo McKinstry about the Lancaster bomber. You can read it here.

Do you agree with what Leo says? How important do you think this plane was to Allied victory? And does anyone still remember lying in the dark and listening to the Lancasters flying overhead?

The AVRO Lancaster was an awesome aircraft . Now there are RCAF personel who would say the Halifax , I disagree. The bomb load capacity was awesome up to 22,000 lbs . It managed some of the
most difficcult operations of the war , The Dams raid, Tirpitz ,the night bombing offensive .
This past Christmas I saw up close a MK X lancaster that the Aviation Museuim at Calgary ALberta has , and she was gorgeous , if you forget what she was built for . And as to the Americans comment mentioined in the story. 20 years ago I had a chance to see a B 52 and look at its bomb bay gave me the same feeling BIG . And for the mid 1940s the Lancaster was all that . ;)

Germany had no heavy bombers it would seem? Was this a factor in winning the War? Presumably saved our cities from great destruction?
