I have just finished the seige of constantinople by Roger Crowley. Really enjoyed it and am looking forward to more of his books.

One of the interesting things was asymmetric nature of the risks. The defenders just needed to lose once for the battle to be lost, but the attackers could try, fail and try again any number of times.

For something light try Napoleon's Haemorrhoids by Phil Mason full of little historical nuggets like a standard foot was measured as Henry I'sts forearm. For something heavy Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes is an awesome novel of a marine's tour in Vietnam. It is that war's "All quiet on the western front". An amazing work of literature.
