Roman Empire and Christianity

I am looking forward to the start of Diarmuid MacCullooch's new series on BBC Four about Christianity. I know that some pagan temples were destroyed, whereas others were converted to churches, but after the fall of the Western Empire in 476 AD, what happened to the likes of the Colosseum and Circus Maximus?
