Say hello

Postby Dave Musgrove » Thu Aug 27, 2009 9:01 am

So, this is the new site, new forum, new everything. Let's get the conversation going by a few introductions. If you've just signed up, why not tell us who you are, where you're from (no need to be precise) and what sort of history really floats your boat.

Let me start. I'm Dave, I edit the magazine, which is based in the beating heart of Bristol, and Medieval history has always done it for me (I did my PhD in the medieval archaeology of the Somerset Levels). I always enjoy a bit of prehistory to boot, and I'm more than happy reading about anything else from Romans to the 20th century and anything in between.

Hello, I'm Susanne Frank – I'm the art editor of BBC History. Which means I design the covers and lay out the pages. I haven't got a history background, but I read every feature before laying it out and have learnt quite a bit about history over the last 6 years. The period I'm most interested in is the 20th century, especially Second World War and Holocaust. As a student, I helped design a memorial museum for a Polish prisoner of war camp in Germany which sparked an interest for this subject. - Apart from that, I love history around us - in architecture, landscape, castles, churches etc.

Hello all,

I'm Rob Attar, Features Editor on the magazine. I'm very excited about our new site and hope to hear from lots of you on this forum.

Although I have enjoyed reading and writing about most periods during my time here, my main interest lies in modern history. Ever since I read a biography of Stalin at school I have been particularly fascinated by the history of the Soviet Union. My favourite history book is Simon Sebag Montefiore's Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar, which is a brilliant study of the intrigues at the top level of Soviet government.

Hello there
My name's Spencer Mizen and I'm the production editor on BBC History Magazine. I've been interested in history since reading about Alfred the Great burning the cakes in a Ladybird book in junior school. It came as a bit of a shock to learn a few years later that this incident is probably more fabrication than fact!

The two areas of history in which I'm most interested are very different: England in the Dark Ages and the Second World War. On the subject of the latter, I'm looking forward to the Atlantic convoys series starting on Channel 4 this week. My granddad was in the merchant navy, so it will fascinating to learn a bit more about what he went through.

Hi I'm Sarah, I joined BBC History a little under a year ago as designer, so I help Susanne out with the layout of the magazine. I especially enjoy reading the social history features about 'normal' lives in the past, and I also have a thing for visiting atmospheric ruins which transport me back into another world!
I shall definitely be checking out the visit history section for some Welsh castles to see on my holiday in a few weeks time.

Hello my name is Andrew McTernan,
I am a Geordie who is currently living in Melbourne, Australia.

WWII is the subject that I have read the most about, and ultimately what got me into history, but the whole period in Europe from WWI building up to WWII fascinates me.

I have also studied Roman history in Britain whilst at school, which maybe I didn't think so much at the time, but looking back was very interesting as living in Newcastle upon Tyne we were able to actually visit and see parts of the Hadrian's Wall, and also forts like Vinderlander.

Also in particular I am interested in British history, for example the Royals, English Civil War, 1950s and 1960s, and also the 19th century.

Hello, I'm Jeffrey, I am a 59 year old Englishman who has lived here near Edinburgh since 1973. I have no academic qualifications in history and I was consistently in the bottom five of my history class at an English grammar school. My interest in history came alive in 1974 after watching Mark Arnold-Forsters' brilliant series The World at War on Channel 4. The main areas of history that I enjoy reading about are The Hundred Years' War, Sixteenth Century Europe (especially France), the Cathars and World War Two.

My name is Randal and I'm a Texan residing in the U.S. - please don't hold that against me, most of us are OK.

I have two bachelor's degrees, one in Mass Communications and the other in History. Beginning next January I'm hoping to begin graduate school where I plan on studying museum administration or archiving.

My interests include general British colonial history, World War I (specifically the Middle Eastern campaigns and the Arab Bureau) and the American Civil War.

Hello

I'm Julian Humphrys and I write the Milestones Section and the Quiz for BBC History Magazine. I'm also the magazine's History Daytripper. Watch out for visits to Conwy, Carlisle and Culloden in future issues. Unfortunately I haven't been able to persuade Dave Musgrove that Cairo can in fact be visited on a day trip from the UK. I've recently accepted a post as Development Officer for the Battlefields Trust, an excellent organisation which works to preserve and promote UK fields of conflict. The work sends me all round the country, from Culloden to the Scillies and from time to time I'll be letting you know what I've been up to on the website's blog section.

I live in Surrey, support Southampton FC, read history at Emmanuel College Cambridge, have written one or two books on matters military and once appeared on Dr Who.
