abandoned medieval towns

Hello,

I have written a novel about a medieval town, Kenfig, that was engulfed in sand dunes and I was wondering if anyone knows of other medieval towns that met the same fate.

Hello Mansel,
I'm not aware of any towns that suffered a similar fate to the town you mention, but if you're interested in abandoned medieval towns/villages in general, you might like our Where History Happened feature on the topic. You can read it at http://www.historyextra.com/feature/vil ... isappeared.

Best wishes,

Thank you very much for your reply. I might be wrong about this, but I believe the town of Dunwich was swallowed up by sand in the late 1700s? But in regard to medieval towns disappearing under sand dunes I wonder if Kenfig is unique?

I notice from the article recommended earlier in this link that Dunwich was indeed destroyed by the elements, but was 'washed away', not covered by sand dunes. Kenfig was covered by a vast expanse of sand dunes and the possibility remains that the medieval town lies under the sand, waiting to be discovered. Surely the BBC could make a fascinating programme about that?!

I have heard that Time Team are considering a dig at Kenfig. There is a great story to be told there and it is a shame that, again, the BBC seem to be missing out.

Last week, Time Team were at Kenfig, digging and filming for a programme to be transmitted next year. I suspect the Kenfig programme will be a highlight of the series because there is a complete medieval town buried under the sand along with possible Roman and Viking finds too. A pity the BBC have not been tempted to film there, but maybe the History Magazine will run a feature on Kenfig one day?
