WWII pacific history

Antony Beevor has said he can't write a book about the Pacific theatre of WWII because he doesn't think he'd be able to get access to the archives in Japan. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensl ... -f34d.html
Interesting take. Beevor, one of the bestselling historians today, is of course famous for his series of WWII big ticket books - the latest being on D-Day (which we covered in the June issue of BBC History Magazine and were extensively quoted in the press for his comments on Allied action at Caen http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/ma ... ay-bombing).
The opening up of archives in Russia enabled him to make such a gripping account of Stalingrad a few years back. Will we ever see anything similar for the war in the Pacific?

Max Hastings' Nemesis is one of the best recent books I've read on the Pacific War. It only really covers the closing months of the conflict but does it in a fair amount of depth. Have others read it and if so what do people think?

There is a major WW11 Pacific war history Conference taking place at Alrewas, Staffordshire adjacent to the National Memorial Arboretum this year. This is the 4th International Researching FEPOW History Conference, September 2012. Full details are available at www.researchingfepowhistory.org.uk
It is open to anyone interested in researching the FEPOW records, including those in Japan, the National Archives, Changi records etc.
