Set in the rolling greens of Staffordshire, the National Memorial Arboretum is a constantly evolving site with more than 30,000 trees and acres of woodland and gardens to explore. It’s far more than just a woodland walk though, as it also features more than 300 memorials dedicated to the UK’s servicemen and women, civilian associations and services, each with a fascinating story to tell.

The battles of the First World War may never have reached British soil, but their world-changing effects ensured that life at home would never be the same again. This summer, the Arboretum will commemorate the centenary of the battle of Passchendaele between 31 July - 10 November. The programme, 1917: Empire at War, will not only remember the battle, but will also focus on the social changes that occurred during the war.

Activities begin on 31 July, the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the battle, with an outdoor public service leading into a live link to the official commemorations in Belgium. Other activities marking the battle will include guided walks, art exhibitions, a visitor participative art project and an above-ground replica trench. Find out more here and plan your visit today.

In the meantime, would you like to win two tickets to the Arboretum’s Home Front Proms on Saturday 5 August? Not only will the lucky winner get to enjoy the rousing sounds of a military band’s live performance at dusk, but they’ll also be treated to an overnight stay in the nearby Swinfen Hall Hotel (with breakfast included).

A beautiful 18th century manor house set in 100 acres of grounds that feature landscaped gardens, Swinfen Hall is the only AA Inspector’s Choice red star hotel in Staffordshire or the West Midlands. Just a 10-minute drive from the Arboretum, it also houses the only AA three-rosette restaurant in Staffordshire.

The prize is valid on Saturday 5 August only. The prize includes two complimentary tickets to the National Memorial Arboretum’s Home Front Proms event along with an overnight stay at the nearby Swinfen Hall Hotel on a B&B basis on Saturday 5 August. The prize is as advertised and cannot be substituted for any activity or for a cash alternative. Transport to and from the Arboretum, and Swinfen Hall Hotel is not provided. No additional activities can be added to the prize, it must be taken in its standard format. The winner will be selected at random no later than 28 July and will be informed by 31 July by the National Memorial Arboretum by telephone.
