Talk: Surviving Vesuvius: Pliny and the Eruption of AD 79


Chester: Friday 25 October, 20.30–21.30


Talk synopsis: The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 overwhelmed Pompeii, Herculaneum, and many surrounding towns. Daisy considers Pliny the Elder – historian, admiral of the fleet, and author of a fascinating encyclopaedia of Natural History – who died in the disaster, and his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who survived.

Speaker bio: Daisy Dunn is a classicist and cultural critic. She is the author of In the Shadow of Vesuvius: A Life of Pliny, Catullus’ Bedspread: The Life of Rome’s Most Erotic Poet, andThe Poems of Catullus: A New Translation. She edits the Greek culture journal ARGO: A Hellenic Review.
