Talk synopsis: Exploring the turbulent years of 1050–2, Ryan looks at relations between the king and the powerful family of Earl Godwine of Wessex. The strategies of rebellion, including an extended Viking campaign, and the responses of King Edward the Confessor reveal a kingdom standing at the brink of civil war.

Speaker bio: Ryan Lavelle is reader in early medieval history at the University of Winchester. He has authored a range of books on Anglo-Saxon England in the Viking Age, and was a historical advisor on the BBC series The Last Kingdom. His most recent book is Cnut: The North Sea King.
