Karl Marx

Karl Marx (1818–83) was an economist and political theorist who was born in what was then the kingdom of Prussia, but spent much of his life in England. Active at a time when the Industrial Revolution was transforming old economic systems, Marx said that capitalism was doomed because of the opposition it created between workers and owners, and he believed that a new system, socialism, would eventually emerge. His best-known publications were the 1848 'Communist Manifesto' (co-written with Friedrich Engels) and his major work, 'Capital' (Das Kapital). Though he died in 1883, Marxism would have a huge influence on later world events.
