The Historic Photographer of the Year 2018 competition has opened for entries. Here, we look back at nine of the best images from last year's competition…

With the aim of celebrating historic places across the world, the Historic Photographer of the Year invites entries from amateur and professional photographers. The subject can be anything from national treasures to hidden gems – last year’s top entries included a ruined military hospital, Al Capone’s prison cell and a 19th-century pier.

“Exploring the history around us truly opens our eyes to the wonders that sit on our doorstep,” said historian Dan Snow, one of the competition judges. “There’s never been a more exciting opportunity to get out exploring to capture those inspirational places from the past.”

The judges are looking for originality, composition and technical proficiency alongside the story behind the submission and its historical impact. Entries are open until 11.59pm GMT on Sunday 30 September 2018. Find out more here.
