Talk synopsis: Historian Thomas Williams recounts the profound impact Viking raiders had on London. Delving into the city’s darkest age, he charts how it was remodelled by immigrants and natives, kings and commoners, into the fulcrum of national power and identity – a city still haunted by the ghosts of its Viking past.
Speaker bio: Thomas is the bestselling author of Viking Britain(2017, William Collins). He is a former curator at the British Museum, and has taught and lectured in medieval and Viking Age history and archaeology at UCL and the University of Cambridge. His most recent book, Viking London,has recently been published by William Collins.
