Favourite, foe, rival: Lettice Knollys was all of these things. Kinswoman to Elizabeth I, she began the queen’s reign basking in royal favour. However, in 1578, Lettice made a fateful decision. When the queen learned of it, Lettice was forced to live with the consequences for the rest of her life.

Nicola Tallis is an author and historian who specialises in Tudor history. Her first book, Crown of Blood: The Deadly Inheritance of Lady Jane Grey, was published in 2016, followed by 2017’s Elizabeth’s Rival: The Tumultuous Tale of Lettice Knollys, Countess of Leicester.
