- King John: The Worst of Kings
- Yorkshire Museum
- Friday 19 October
King John is generally written off as a monster. His violence, lechery and greed were notorious, and attempts to reinstate his reputation have failed. Yet where did he acquire his obnoxious habits? New evidence suggests we should look to one particular part of John’s empire, and recognise that Magna Carta was just one small episode in a more significant reign.
Nicholas Vincent is professor of medieval history at the University of East Anglia. He is the author of a dozen books, and is currently working on a biography of King John for the Penguin Monarchs series.
