In October 1399, Henry Bolingbroke was crowned Henry IV, king of England, following the deposition of his cousin, Richard II. This talk will explore the ways in which these extraordinary events were explained by contemporaries and reveals the weight of expectation placed on the new king.

Dr Catherine Nall is senior lecturer in medieval literature at Royal Holloway, University of London. She is the author of a new biography of Henry IV for the Penguin Monarchs series.
