1957: ERNIE (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment) selected the first Premium Bond winners.

1660: Quaker Mary Dyer was hanged on the common at Boston, Massachusetts for repeatedly defying a law banning Quakers from the colony.
1879: Louis Napoleon, the prince imperial, was killed in a Zulu ambush while serving with the British army in South Africa. He was the only son of French emperor Napoleon III.
