“America First” is one of Trump’s favourite slogans. But what is the history behind it? The expression has a long, dark past – a story of racism, xenophobia, nativism and the Ku Klux Klan, entangled with a home-grown fascism that America pretends “can’t happen here.”

Sarah Churchwell is professor of American literature at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. Her books include Careless People: Murder, Mayhem and the Invention of The Great Gatsby and The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe.
